PATIENT CENTER
During Your Acupuncture Visit
You will be most comfortable if you wear loose clothing, as acupuncture involves palpation and treatment of various parts of the body. Draping is provided to ensure modesty. Please refrain from wearing perfume, strongly scented oils, and/or lotions on the day of your visit, as many patients are allergic to perfumes and fragrances. After the assessment of symptoms and goals for treatment, a unique and highly individualized treatment plan is set. Treatment may include gua sha, cupping, moxibustion, and electro-acupuncture along with needle placement on a variety of areas of the body as needed. Please try to avoid eating or drinking anything that will stain your tongue, such as coffee, tea, grape juice, or candy for at least an hour before arrival, as we will be examining your tongue and we want it to be its normal color.
After Your Acupuncture Visit
Most patients will feel the after-effects of an acupuncture session by feeling a sense of relaxation and decreased stress responses, increased immunity. In some cases, some might feel an energetic surge of improved energy. Main symptoms may begin to change in frequency and/or intensity in the days after a session. The effectiveness of acupuncture will increase with the frequency and timing of treatment. Clustering treatments in the first few weeks allows for better results and significant symptom relief. As symptoms begin to change and correct treatment is spaced out. Once treatment goals are met, treatment is less frequent and utilized for tune-ups, wellness care, and maintaining health.

Payment & Insurance
At this time, Tend Acupuncture is considered an out-of-network provider and does not participate with any insurance carriers in private practice. We currently accept cash, personal checks, credit cards, and limited “app” transactions (ie: Venmo). Payment is expected at the time of your visit.
Upon request, Tend will provide treatment receipts and documentation for services rendered and all information necessary to submit to your private insurance for your direct reimbursement for out-of-pocket acupuncture services.
The reason many acupuncturists opt for out-of-network services is that the reimbursement rate for an acupuncture service is significantly lower than any other allied health provider along with capped rates. Tend Acupuncture does not work with more than 2 clients at one time as our unique care and quality of service would be significantly affected by limited insurance standards along with their routine denial for modalities. We can not run the practice to the capacity needed, without sacrificing care. The low reimbursement rates per client would not be profitable or sustainable.
To make changes and help the acupuncture profession be more accessible and affordable, please consider making requests to your own private insurance carrier to adjust a reasonable reimbursement rate for acupuncture services. This is a national insurance issue in the acupuncture industry. As acupuncturists continue to lobby for fair reimbursement rates, your voice as an insurance consumer is also very important in making those changes heard.

FAQs
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture uses sterilized filiform needles that pierce the skin into specifically measured areas on the body called acupoints or trigger points. These points are located in areas with a higher concentration of superficial nerves and neuromuscular attachments which are areas where vessels and nerves penetrate muscle fascia. Treatment of these points creates a cascade of neuro responses that promote natural healing.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are inserted into the soft tissues of the body—not into veins or nerves. Points do not usually bleed during or after treatment, although a very small drop of blood may occasionally be seen after the removal of an acupuncture needle. Acupuncture treatment can be so effective and has so few side effects that most patients agree that the benefits they receive from treatment far outweigh any concerns they originally had about the use of needles.
How many treatments do I need?
The effectiveness of acupuncture will increase with the frequency and timing of treatment. Clustering treatments in the first few weeks allows for better results and significant symptom relief. As symptoms begin to change and correct treatment is spaced out. Once treatment goals are met, treatment is less frequent and utilized for tune-ups, wellness care, and maintaining health.
What results can I expect from my treatment?
Every patient is different with chronic or acute conditions that will always depend on the type of problem being treated. Many people may notice the benefits almost immediately, while others need a few treatments before they feel a difference. Some people become very relaxed while others may feel euphoric or energized. People who don't feel any different when they leave the clinic may start to notice changes in their symptoms hours to days later.
What are acupuncture needles like?
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. They are stainless steel, sterile and disposable, and can be inserted with minimal discomfort. Many patients do not even feel the needles being inserted; most patients relax and some even fall asleep. The most common feeling during needling is light pressure or a dull ache around the point. Needles remain in place for about twenty to forty minutes. Usually, relaxation and an elevation of spirit accompany treatment. It is as normal to want to continue resting as it is to be immediately energized. Acupuncture is usually a very positive experience that most people look forward to and enjoy. Even if you are particularly wary or afraid of needles, you’ll likely enjoy acupuncture treatment.
